Serving People

To do service work without organizing can be a form of paternalism. To organize for justice without having a visceral connection to the people can lead to vanity.

~ Scott Douglas

Our location in downtown Birmingham places GBM in the midst of over 660,000 fellow Jefferson Country residents. These are our neighbors, and among them, over 18% – including over 27% of JeffCo’s children – live below the poverty line. Each weekday we open our doors to provide financial help, food, clothing and support for families and individuals in crisis.

Each of GBM’s unique, supporting faith communities are unified in the understanding that we have a moral responsibility to care for our neighbors when they experience economic hardship. At its core, GBM is committed both to healing the wounds of society’s victims and remedying those social conditions, which continue to inflict these same wounds.

It is this personal connection to our most vulnerable neighbors that ensures we remain intimately grounded to the real needs of people in the work we do to reform systems of oppression.
