“At Least Now I Can Eat”: GBM Food Pantry Serves Birmingham’s Hungry

If you ask Herbert, he’ll tell you to just call him H. Then he’ll show you a photo book that shows his transformation from homeless to hopeful.

“I was homeless and slept on the street,” H said, pointing to one of the early photos of him in the book. In the picture, he’s using a ripped and dusty backpack for a pillow. “These pictures were taken just last year when I was living in Linn Park.”

H had gone to a treatment center and had bought an old Cadillac to live in when he got out. But when he left the center, he found his girlfriend had sold the Cadillac, one that he’d spent the little money he had to buy, and was thus left out on the streets.

“I’d been homeless for 2 years. Then some church people came to feed us and I listened to what they had to say. That was when God came into my life,” H said.

“I’m doing better now. I just got out of rehab not too long ago and I got a little apartment. I still have trouble with food since I can’t get food stamps because I have a felony charge,” H explained. That’s where the GBM comes in. H comes by to receive food assistance. “At least now I can eat,” he said.

H is thankful for the help he receives from the GBM and tries to help others in need by telling them about the GBM’s services.

If you’d like to donate to GBM’s food pantry to help people like H, you can drop off nonperishable food items at GBM, located at 2304 12th Ave. N. in Birmingham between 8:30am and 4:30pm. You can also make monetary donations online or by making checks payable to Greater Birmingham Ministries.
