“I Get Food Stamps, But When They Run Out, I’m in Trouble”: Patron Receives Food Assistance While Looking for Work

The patron whose story follows asked to remain anonymous, so for purposes of the story, her name has been changed to Katie.

For Katie, coming to GBM for food assistance is temporary. “I enjoy working and I’m looking for a job, but in the meantime, these services help out a great deal,” Katie said. “The last job I had was as a Certified Nursing Assistant, and I’d like to do that again.”

Right now, Katie isn’t employed, so she doesn’t have incoming coming in. “I get food stamps, but when they run out, I’m in trouble. So until that day comes when I can get more stamps, I’ll have to come here. They’re just helping me through this small amount of time where I con’t have what I need,” Katie said.

While Katie looks for a job, GBM is helping her and her children with food, clothes, and utilities assistance.

“I’m glad there are services like this. And everybody here seems to be really nice,” Katie added. “They seem like they love their jobs.” To which I responded with a smile, “We do.”
