Mrs. Washington has achieved the impossible!

Mrs. Washington has achieved what for many people is an impossible dream: she got her grandchildren to love turnip greens.

She is 68 years old, and cares for her two grandsons, aged 7 and 17. They’re both great students, and love to eat, but Mrs. Washington knows they need healthy food. “They hate vegetables!” she laughs. But for some reason, they will always eat turnip greens when she prepares them.

Mrs. Washington has been caring for her grandsons for a couple of years now, but it’s hard work. She suffers from diabetes, meaning good food is a priority for her too. She also suffers from lupus, a condition that makes her hands swell with pain and makes her speech falter, and has damaged her eyesight. After her doctor stopped prescribing her medication, she changed insurance plans; her new plan covers her medication, but won’t cover her eyeglasses. So she finds herself choosing between clear vision and a pain-free life.

What sustains Mrs. Washington? “I always put Christ first,” she says. “I’ve got God – he’s a good God, and he doesn’t make mistakes!”

Getting healthy food at Greater Birmingham Ministries means one less headache for Mrs. Washington – now she can focus on better health, for herself and her grandchildren. Your contributions to our food pantry make a real difference in the lives of our clients and their families.
