| My Reflection – by Rev. Carolyn Foster, Faith in Community Coordinator
Dr. Louis H. Branscomb served on GBM’s founding Board of Directors from 1970 – 1997 with great distinction, wisdom and grace. She died in 1999. I was fortunate to serve with her in the early 1990s when I was new Board member. What I remember most vividly during my tenure as secretary of the board was taking minutes at the meetings. I took very detailed notes. There were many passionate discussions concerning community issues that impacted marginalized people in Birmingham and I meticulously recorded it all. Dr. Branscomb would sit quietly listening to all of the back and forth of these impassioned conversations. Then she would speak by asking one deep, thought-provoking question that would completely shed new light on the discussion and totally shift the conversation (and my note-taking). She was a brilliant woman. Today, GBM’s conference room where many of those discussions were had is named The Dr. Louis Branscomb Conference Room. I invite you to read this paper about Dr. Branscomb written in 2012 by Emeritus Board Member Rev. Dr. Lawson Higgs. It is GBM’s honor to recognize her during Women’s History Month. |
