Our location in downtown Birmingham places GBM in the midst of over 660,000 fellow Jefferson County residents. These are our neighbors, and among them, over 18% – including over 27% of JeffCo’s children – live below the poverty line. Each weekday we open our doors to provide financial help, food, clothing, and support for families and individuals in crisis.
It is this personal connection to our most vulnerable neighbors that ensures we remain intimately grounded to the real needs of people in the work we do to reform systems of oppression. We meet with clients individually, listen to their stories, speak with them about their issues and concerns, offer resources and build relationships. This connection with our clients helps us identify pressing issues that we can address on a systemic level. Many of our clients have played key leadership roles in our work advocating for justice in housing, utility costs, and other problematic areas.
